The Mystery Is Becoming More Clear

Our mission together on earth is to be in strict training to love God with all our hearts, minds, and strength and to call as many people to join us as we can.

(Matthew 22:36-40; 28:18-20)

There are some clear principles that we can deduce from the totality of the study of scripture.

  • An omniscient and omnipotent God created physical reality to last forever. He created humans to exist within that reality in physical bodies forever.
  • He intends to live with them and within them, enabling them to rule in this reality under his providential and sovereign care as a royal family.
  • God has been developing this plan throughout the pages of history, demonstrating that humans are completely incapable of creating a life that works apart from God himself being the center of their minds and hearts.
  • You were created with the privilege of playing a role in this plan. You were chosen and saved with the new birth and enabled with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit for this plan.

The stories of scripture revolve around two great promises of God to humanity. The Abrahamic covenant and the Davidic covenant.

The Abrahamic covenant makes it clear that God’s plan and promise are for all of humanity, not just the Jewish people. God promised Abraham a nation of people that would produce a line of kings who would populate and rule from a particular place on the earth. There is no evidence whatsoever that the plan has ever been canceled or replaced, in fact Galatians 3:15-18 reaffirms it. A promise is a promise. God is not pulling a grand bait and switch on humanity.

The Davidic covenant is God’s promise to provide a specific king for humanity who will rule properly. History has demonstrated that humans are incapable of fulfilling this role, so the story of Jesus is about God becoming a human himself so that he could do that which humans are utterly incapable. This is why human politics, on the one hand are so important, but on the other hand are utterly futile. There is only one plan that will provide for a stable, peaceful, and glorious existence for humans on the earth. It is this plan for which we as believers are engaged in strict training. God is training us through the church to become agents of making this plan a reality. Anyone who thinks they can participate in this plan apart from the church in isolation is under a satanic deception. Let’s not be infantile in our thinking, I'm not saying you can’t be rescued from hell, I’m saying you can’t prepare for a role in the kingdom apart from God’s sovereignly ordained vessel of training and preparation, the church.

Ephesians 3

2 Surely you have heard about the administration of God’s grace that was given to me for you, 3 that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly. 4 In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets. 6 This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus. . . .

9 and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. 10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, 11 according to his eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.

This plan will come to full fruition at the return of Jesus Christ to the earth. At the return of Jesus and the resurrection of the dead in Christ, the promises of God to Abraham and David will be completely fulfilled. Jesus is returning to a specific piece of land to set up a global government on the earth populated by and presided over by resurrected believers from both the Old and New Testament. He will appear in the sky, arrive at the mount of Olives outside of Jerusalem, destroy a satanic army assembled to stop him, rescue the citizens of the city, and begin making preparations to organize the earth in truth, righteousness, and global prosperity for all nations. He is even now, for those who are willing, raising up and preparing the right people for the jobs. This is what you signed up for at your baptism.

Jesus didn’t call you to coddle you. The church is a training ground, and training implies resistance and difficulty at ever increasing levels. It implies setbacks, and injuries, and sometimes drudgery. Life, and the church are difficult by design. And that is precisely why so many people quit. The difficulty is an opportunity to overcome and improve, to demonstrate our loyalty to God and resilience, but so often in our immaturity we take it as an excuse to check out and quit. That choice will be exposed in the next age.

If you think the next age is going to be one long magical Disney experience, complete with a hopper ticket and a fastpass to avoid long lines, then you are in for a very rude awakening. God has heroic challenges planned for us that will require great courage, calling us to remarkable feats of strength. Can you even begin to imagine how boring existence would be without challenges? Part of the glory of the next age will be in the magnitude of the challenges, not the removal of them. At the resurrection of the dead, you will be enabled with glory, to the measure that your life and preparation warrant it, precisely for the exponentially greater challenges and feats of strength that God is preparing you for. You are being trained for heroic exploits and wild adventures.

Heaven is about awe and wonder and glorifying God with the risks we are willing to take in order to demonstrate our radical love for him. And God is going to provide us with extravagant abilities, tools, and resources because there is nothing that brings him more pleasure than watching his kids go for it in order to impress him. This is the stuff life is made of, and if you think that is just going to float off on a cloud of rainbows and magical unicorns then you are deluded with Sunday school soccer mom theology. That us just not where the stories of scripture are leading us.
